The Annotated Book of Mormon : II Nephi : 19

19:1 Nevertheless, the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and afterwards did more 1grievously afflict by the way of the 2Red Sea beyond Jordan in Galilee of the nations. The following section is quoted from Isaiah 9. See the note at I Nephi 20:1.

9:1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

Topics: KJV Translation Errors
[1] The phrase ‘grievously afflict’ in the KJV should be translated as ‘honor’. The Book of Mormon follows the KJV error. The NIV renders the phrase ‘...In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles...’ Verse 2 and following of this chapter makes it clear that the KJV rendering makes no contextual sense.

[2] The addition of the word ‘Red’ creates a geographical problem. The phrase "way of the sea" is the name of an ancient trading route that ran from the Nile Delta along the Palestinian coast into Mesopotamia (known as the Via Maris to the Romans). The Book of Mormon phrase makes no sense, and could never have been part of Isaiah.

19:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
19:3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and increased the joy--they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 9:3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
19:4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor. 9:4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
19:5 For every 1battle of the warrior 2is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. 9:5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

1830 version: "For every battle of the warrior with confused noise..." The deleteion of the KJV italics resulted in an incomprehensible sentence, which had to be corrected in later editions of the Book of Mormon.
